About MPIM

The Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik is one of the research institutes of
the external link Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V.

The working areas are:

Algebraic Groups
Arithmetic Geometry
Number Theory
Representation Theory
Algebraic and Complex Geometry
Differential Geometry and Topology
Algebraic Topology
Global Analysis
Non-Commutative Geometry
Dynamical Systems
Mathematical Physics

The number of permanent (also scientific) staff is comparatively small. Almost all of the mathematicians from all over the world come as visitors for a fixed period to do their studies. This concept contains in particular the offering to the mathematicians to discuss mathematical problems or exchange ideas with their colleagues.
The research is supported by the library, the administration and the computer group.

The institute was founded in 1980 by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hirzebruch who directed it till he retired in 1995. Today the institute is directed by a board of directors consisting of Prof. Dr. W. Ballmann, Prof. Dr. G. Faltings, Prof. Dr. P. Teichner and Prof. Dr. D. Zagier. Prof. Dr. G. Harder, Prof. Dr. F. Hirzebruch and Prof. Dr. Y. Manin are retired scientific members of the institute. Professor Dr. D. Zagier is presently the managing director.

Mathematical activities

The whole life inside the institute is centered around mathematics. Talks of the mathematicians are organized by their own. During the university terms, the weekly program, which also contains lectures and seminars of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn, announces the mathematical activities. Outside the university terms, activities at the MPI are announced individually.

Mathematische Arbeitstagung

Since 1957 the "Mathematische Arbeitstagung" takes place in Bonn. The first 30 Arbeitstagungen, organized by Prof. Friedrich Hirzebruch, form the "First Series". The "Second Series", organized by the board of directors of the MPIM, takes place since 1993 every two years.

For more information on activities at MPIM check the "Events"-section.

Our preprint series

The MPI preprint series consists of unrefereed papers written by guests of the Max-Planck-Institut. Papers written during the stay at the institute qualify for an MPI preprint.
