This talk is a progress report on joint work with Greg Friedman and Dev Sinha. The connection between submanifold intersection and cup product has been fruitfully explored from many viewpoints, and we set out to present a new one. The ultimate goal is to have a cochain theory for smooth manifolds representing their E-infinity structure geometrically. Intersection of submanifolds is commutative but only partially defined. In this talk, I will describe how to use a cell structure and a canonical vector field to "convert" this partially defined algebra into a (fully defined) E-infinity algebra.
