Opening + talk by Prof. G. Faltings: From Abel to Mordell

I give an overview of the developments around the proof of the Mordell conjecture in the last century. This did not happen in total isolation. The final proof relied on many ideas in arithmetic geometry, many developed by the Russian school. I try to keep it elementary, with occasional technical details thrown in for the experts. This is essentially my Abel lecture in Oslo.
