For any complex algebraic group G, there is a complete ind-variety X parametrising connected subgroups of G and a universal family. I present this construction, where the semi-continuity of certain discrete invariants of Lie algebras play an important role.

I will present some results concerning projective varieties X that are 3-connected by irreducible curves of a fixed degree d. We will restrict to the study of the varieties of this type spanning a linear space of maximal possible dimension. Under this extremality assumption, we will prove that X is rational, that there exists a unique 3-covering familly F of curves on X and that the general element of F is a rational normal curve. Then we will provide a complete classification of such extremal X when d>3.

Given a smooth projective $3$-fold $Y$, with $H^{3,0}(Y)=0$, the Abel-Jacobi map induces a morphism from each smooth variety parameterizing $1$-cycles in $Y$ to the intermediate Jacobian $J(Y)$. We consider in this talk the existence of families of $1$-cycles in $Y$ for which this induced morphism is surjective with rationally connected general fiber, and various applications of this property. When $Y$ itself is uniruled, we relate this property to the existence of an integral homological decomposition of the diagonal of $Y$.

Assuming the abundance conjecture, we prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective
variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber. This is joint work with B. Claudon and J. Kollár.

I will report on joint work with Bert van Geemen concerning moduli of principally polarised abelian fourfolds with an automorphism of order five. This moduli problem gives rise to a compact Shimura curve and a Shimura surface. I will explain a new technique to exhibit explicit projective models for them. The Shimura varieties possess a rich arithmetic and geometric structure that will be described in detail.

Each Enriques surface $S$ has an exceptional collection consisting of 10 mutually orthogonal vector bundles. If $S$ is nodal (has an embedding into $Gr(2,4)$) then we show that the complement category of this collection has a description in terms of the Artin--Mumford quartic double solid.
