Ribbons, coideals and the reflection equation

We will give a conceptual survey of some recent results in the construction of tensor product representations of the Artin-Tits braid group of type B using q-deformed enveloping algebras U_q(g). Each of these defines a cylindrical structure on braided tensor categories of suitable U_q(g)-modules. We will pay particular attention to representations depending on an additional "spectral" parameter which play an important role in quantum integrable systems (exactly solvable models) with boundaries.
