We all know Quantum Mechanics works. Almost everything in our everyday life is based on principles of
Quantum Mechanics one way or another: from cellular phones to stability of atoms and, therefore, to the
very existence of our Universe. Yet, every time the word "Quantum" is mentioned, it brings mystery and
uncertainty. Ever since the discovery of Quantum Mechanics 100 years ago, it baffled the greatest minds
of the 20th century. In this talk, I will review our quest for elusive mathematical framework that is supposed

We estimate the dimensions of Weierstrass cycles in moduli spaces
of algebraic curves. (By definition Weierstrass cycles are cycles
specified   in terms of Weierstrass points.) Under certain conditions we
calculate  cohomology classes corresponding to these cycles in terms of
factorial Schur functions . We give also a series of relations in
tautological rings in terms of these functions.
Our calculations are based on the calculation of equivariant cohomology of
infinite-dimensional Grassmannian (we show that it can be identified with

In this talk, I will present a derived version of the  resolutions of the moduli spaces of stable maps
(for all genera). This  resolution can be used to rigorously define the so-called reduced  Gromov-Witten
numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds (i.e., the GW numbers  associated to the main components of the
stable map moduli).

The derived resolutions are singular (in the usual sense). For further  applications, a resolution
(in the usual sense) is desirable (for  example, Zinger's proof of genus-1 mirror formula uses such a

Most of the talk will be devoted to the motivation and construction of derived categories in algebraic geometry. The talk is independent from the seminar on derived categories (in fact it is much more basic and intersects with first talks of the mentioned seminar). We will also present known results and conjectures about derived categories of toric varieties. People not working with derived categories, but willing to see a short introduction to the subject are particularly welcome.
