MPIM Lecture Hall

Mondays 14:30 - 16:00 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn
First lecture on Oct. 6, 2014, by Christian Blohmann on Classical Mechanics

Encouraged by several IMPRS students, we will offer a number of surveys on mathematical notions that are motivated by physics. The idea is to explain the mathematics but also give the main motivating examples that are usually discussed in physics classes. Topics will include

- Classical Mechanics, action functionals and symplectic manifolds
- Relativistic Electro-Dynamics as a U(1)-Gauge theory
- General Relativity and the Einstein-Hilbert action
- Quantum mechanics, harmonic oscillator, geometric quantization
- Dirac operators, positrons and the Dirac sea
- Quantum Electro-Dynamics and Feynman diagrams
