Homogeneous polynomials in many variables and rational points on varieties

Consider a homogeneous polynomial over some field k such that the number of variables is “much larger” than the degree. Does it necessarily have a nontrivial zero in k? Fields for which the answer to this question is affirmative are called C_i fields. Starting with this classical notion, we will overview some important aspects of the study of rational points on algebraic varieties.
