A large and well studied class of nonpositively curved manifolds consists of the locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type. In this talk, I will describe classical results about the structure of ends of such locally symmetric spaces via several examples and then explain recent results which show that some of this structure extends beyond locally symmetric spaces to more general nonpositively curved manifolds.
