Topological field theories are an area of research where topology, category theory and physics meet. The cobordism hypothesis
summarizes the content of a topological field theory elegantly in a tiny algebraic datum. I will try to convince you that the
cobordism hypothesis is intuitively reasonable by taking a look at the one- and two-dimensional cases while avoiding too
much higher category theory.
