The Fáry--Milnor theorem states that every non-trivial knot in Euclidean space has total curvature at least $4\pi$. In the talk I will discuss a version of this result for more general ambient manifolds (such as the n-sphere or hyperbolic space). The proof relies on techniques from metric geometry, developed for the study of minimal surfaces in non-smooth ambient spaces.
