Murasugi sums and primeness of links

In this talk I will present some results on how primeness of fibered links behaves under an operation called the Murasugi sum. As an application, this allows us to partially resolve a 30 year old conjecture due to Cromwell concerning the detection of primeness of links in braid diagrams.
