In the first part of the talk - aimed at a general audience - I will give an
overview of the existence problem for tight and Stein fillable contact structures on
closed 3-manifolds, describing a few tools of the trade. In the second part - aimed at
an audience with stronger interests in this area - I will talk more in detail about some
specific results concerning the existence problem and, if time permits, about related
work in progress.
