We explain how to use standard gauge-theoretical techniques to prove that a given 3-manifold does not bound a negative definite 4-manifold. The recurring example of the talk will be Poincaré's homology sphere. We will discuss the obstructions coming from Donaldson’s theorem and from the Heegaard Floer d-invariants. To demonstrate that the latter are convenient to work with, we will compute the d-invariant of the Poincaré sphere in 3 different ways.
