This talk will introduce the notion of a veering triangulation of a 3-manifold. This is an ideal triangulation of a 3-manifold satisfying a certain handedness property, first defined by Ian Agol. An interesting property of layered veering triangulations is the connection with fibered faces of the Thurston norm; a tool for studying fibrations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
