Online: Self-conjugate 7-core partitions and Hurwitz class numbers

I will describe some of the results of a recent paper joint with Kathrin
Bringmann and Ben Kane. We first use modular arguments to extend a result
of Ono-Raji in describing the number of self-conjugate 7-core partitions as
certain Hurwitz class numbers. Secondly, we provide a combinatorial
explanation for such a result, relying on the structure of abaci and
extended t-residue diagrams - the central connection relies on Gauss'
theorems on the relationship between quadratic forms and the genus in the
class group.
