The representation theory of p-adic groups developed by analogy from the theory of real Lie groups, but is for the most part much more algebraic and can be studied in important cases with algebro-geometric techniques and categorificafion. Some aspects of the theory, namely the so-called tempered representations, have inherently analytic aspects that have resisted categorifcation thus far. We will survey for non-experts recent work of Braverman and Kazhdan that introduces an algebraic version of theory of tempered representations, and briefly mention some connections and applications, both realized and potential.
