Geometric families of Galois representations

We will discuss certain universal properties of Galois actions on \ell-adic cohomolgy of a smooth,
projective variety defined over a finitely generated field of any characteristic. After a survey of
basic facts of the theory, we will present some recent results obtained in a collaboration with
Gebhard Böckle and Sebastian Petersen.
