The star construction due to Freedman-Quinn and Stong is used to construct homotopy equivalent manifolds with opposite Kirby-Siebenmann invariant.
Inspired by this we present a smooth construction that can yield smooth manifolds that are homotopy equivalent but not (stably) homeomorphic.
