We consider an innocent-looking question on unlikely tangencies
between sections of an elliptic surface which leads to connections
with divisibility sequences, height bounds, and the geography of
algebraic surfaces. The techniques involved are mostly complex
analytic, and the talk should be accessible to non-specialists. This
is joint work with Giancarlo Urzua.
