Hessenberg varieties and the Springer correspondence for symmetric spaces

We consider Springer correspondence in the case of symmetric pairs. In this setting various new phenomena occur which are not present in the classical Springer theory, for example, representations of the braid group on the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties. This is joint work in progress with Tsao-hsien Chen and Kari Vilonen.
