The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics is one of the nearly eighty research institutes of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V. [3]. The institute was founded in 1980 by Prof. Friedrich Hirzebruch [4] who directed it till he retired in 1995. Today the institute is led by a board of directors consisting of professors W. Ballmann [5], G. Faltings [6], P. Teichner [7] and D. Zagier [8]. They are joined by professors S. Gukov [9], S. Müller [10] and W. Nahm [11] as external scientific members and professors G. Harder [12] and Yu. Manin [13] as retired scientific members of the institute. Professor P. Teichner [7] is presently the managing director.
The working areas are:
The institute has only a small number of permanent staff. Most of the scientists visit the institute for a fixed period of time within our Guest Program [14]. This concept aims at stimulating the discussion and the exchange of ideas within the mathematics community.
The research is supported by the library, the administration and the computer group.
