Moduli spaces parameterize continuous deformations of mathematical objects. Their study (starting with ideas of Riemann in the 19th century) has revealed many surprises: universal structures, connections between different subjects, and wild leaps. I will present some sense of the motivations and results related to the study of moduli spaces from the perspective of examples ranging from configurations of mechanical linkages to the moduli of varieties and sheaves.

Rahul Pandharipande is a professor at ETH Zurich and works on algebraic geometry. He studied mathematics at Princeton University and received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1994. From 1994 to 1997 he was Dickson Instructor and then Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, from 1998 to 2002 Associate Professor and Professor at the California Institute of Technology, and from 2002 to 2011 Professor at Princeton. He has been a professor at ETH Zurich since 2011. In 2013, Rahul Pandharipande received the Clay Research Award. He was Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Beijing in 2002 and in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. He was an Einstein Visiting Fellow at the Berlin Mathematical School from 2015 to 2019. He is a recipient of the Humboldt Research Award 2023.
