We will review the basics of quantum topology such as the colored Jones polynomial of a knot, its standard conjectures relating to asymptotics, arithmeticity and modularity, as well as the recent quantum hyperbolic invariants of Kashaev et al, their state-integrals and their structural properties. The course is aimed to be accessible by graduate students and young researchers.

Obstruction theory shows that any two aspherical CW complexes with isomorphic fundamental groups are homotopy equivalent. The Borel Conjecture states that any two closed aspherical manifolds with isomorphic fundamental groups are homeomorphic. The Borel Conjecture for manifolds with boundary states that two aspherical compact manifolds with isomorphic fundamental groups and homeomorphic boundaries are in fact homeomorphic.

Wed, 2020-12-02 14:30 - 15:30 We say that a prime number p is an Artin prime for g if g is a primitive root mod p. For appropriately chosen integers g and d, we present a conjecture for the asymptotic number of prime pairs (p,p+d) such that both p and p+d are Artin primes for g. Our result suggests that the distribution of Artin prime pairs, amongst the ordinary prime pairs, is largely governed by a Poisson process. (Joint work with Magdaléna Tinková and Mikuláš Zindulka).

Wed, 2020-12-09 14:30 - 15:30 Kontsevich--Zagier periods form a natural number system that extends the

algebraic numbers by adding constants coming from geometry and physics.

Because there are countably many periods, one would expect it to be

possible to compute effectively in this number system. This would require

an effective height function and the ability to separate periods of bounded

height, neither of which are currently possible.

In this talk, we introduce an effective height function for periods of quartic
