Finite groups of birational automorphisms of algebraic varieties

Let X be an algebraic variety and let Bir(X) be the group of its birational selfmaps.
It turns out that, in many cases, the structure of finite subgroups of Bir(X)
satisfies the same properties as the structure of finite subgroups of linear algebraic
groups. We discuss this phenomena in details.
