Determining the simple characters of Lie groups and their relatives has been a central problem in representation theory since its earliest days. We will survey for non-specialists some of the major results and conjectures here, from Lie's era to the present, and indicate their connections to other areas of math and physics. Our emphasis throughout will be on the recurring basic patterns in this area (abelianization and Hecke symmetry), which are surprisingly powerful given their simplicity.
