MPI-Oberseminar Are there infinitely many periodic continued fractions $[a_1,a_2,\ldots]$ in $Q(\sqrt 5)$ with each $a_i = 1$ or $2$ ? We will discuss a framework for this and similar questions that provides a link between Littlewood's conjecture and Zaremba's conjecture. Both conjectures are open but considerable progress has been made.
