About the MPIM
The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics is one of the nearly eighty research institutes of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V.. The institute was founded in 1980 by Prof. Friedrich Hirzebruch who directed it till he retired in 1995. Today the institute is led by a board of directors consisting of professors W. Ballmann, G. Faltings, P. Teichner and D. Zagier. They are joined by professors S. Gukov, S. Müller and W. Nahm as external scientific members and professors G. Harder and Yu. Manin as retired scientific members of the institute. Professor P. Teichner is presently the managing director.

The institute has only a small number of permanent staff. Most of the scientists visit the institute for a fixed period of time within our Guest Program. This concept aims at stimulating the discussion and the exchange of ideas within the mathematics community.
The research is supported by the library, the administration and the computer group.

The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics is located in the city center of Bonn between Münsterplatz and Bottlerplatz. You will find the entrance on Vivatsgasse 7 (see Street-map). To enter please ring the bell.

How to get here
Location
The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics is located in the city center of Bonn between Münsterplatz and Bottlerplatz. You will find the entrance on Vivatsgasse 7 (marked by the red diamond; coordinates: latitude=50.734915, longitude=7.098455)

Query Deutsche Bahn AG for a connection to Bonn Main Station (Bonn Hauptbahnhof; see lower part of the map). Leave the station through the main entrance, cross the street in front of it and follow Poststrasse to Münsterplatz. Continue on Münsterplatz until you have passed the Post Office, then turn left into Vivatsgasse. After a few steps you will find the entrance to the institute on the left hand side, just before reaching Bottlerplatz and Sterntor.
The distance between the station and the institute is about 500 m or a 5 minute walk.
The institute is located in a pedestrian area and inaccessible by car. However, there are two public car-parks nearby. Reaching Bonn via Autobahn A 555 (from Cologne) or A 565 leave at cross Bonn-Nord, follow Heinrich-Böll-Ring, Thomastrasse, Am Alten Friedhof until you reach Berliner Platz (near Bonn city hall = Stadthaus). Turning left you can park in Stadthausgarage. Turning right you will find Friedensplatz-Garage. From Berliner Platz it is only a short stroll to the institute. Walk down Sterntorbrücke, cross Friedensplatz and follow Vivatsgasse until you find the entrance to the MPI on the right near Bottlerplatz.
Cologne/Bonn (CGN) is the international airport closest to the institute. From the airport take Airport-Express-Bus SB 60 to Bonn Main Station (Hauptbahnhof) and then follow the instructions above.
Another option is Frankfurt/Main International Airport (FRA), which can be reached by high speed trains in about one hour.
